Known more commonly by travelers as the Rainbow Mountain Peru and by locals as<em>\u00a0La Monta\u00f1a de Siete Colores\u00a0<\/em>(mountain of seven colors) or\u00a0<em>Cerro Colorado<\/em>\u00a0(colored hill), the geographical wonder is famous for its rainbow tonality- a surreal natural phenomena of mineral deposits streaked across sandstone rock.<\/p>\n<p>In an area\u00a0claimed to have one of the most impressive mountain sceneries in the Andes, Vinicunca is in close proximity to the snow capped Ausangate,\u00a0the highest\u00a0and most sacred mountain in the Cusco region.<\/p>\n<p>Rainbow Mountain Peru can be accomplished as either\u00a0a part of longer trekking routes such as the\u00a0lodge to lodge <a href=\"https:\/\/atvcuscoadventures.com\/tours\/ausangate-7-lagoons-full-day\/\">Ausangate trek<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0a\u00a0shorter trip focused on Vinicunca. According to your outdoor interests and personal time constraints, trips range from two to nine days and are available with luxury camping accommodations, or as lodge to lodge treks.<\/p>\n<p>One day tours are widely offered from\u00a0Cusco for backpackers and Aracari strongly recommends against this. The mountain pass is\u00a0at high altitude, and on a multi day trip you have more time to acclimatize which is essential to factor in. Furthermore day trippers take the same route up and down, usually visiting at the same time jostling for the view, while longer routes can better avoid the group tours. Equally as important, multiple days give you more time to explore one of the most\u00a0<strong>pristine mountain ecosystems<\/strong>\u00a0in the world\u00a0\u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/atvcuscoadventures.com\/tours\/palcoyo-mountain-hike-full-day\/\">Rainbow mountain<\/a> is definitely not the only highlight of this area!<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"TAKE_IN_THE_NATURAL_BEAUTY_OF_THE_VALLEYS_LEADING_TO_THE_RAINBOW_MOUNTAIN_PERU_AND_THE_CORDILLERA_VILCANOTA\"><\/span>TAKE IN THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF THE VALLEYS LEADING TO THE RAINBOW MOUNTAIN PERU AND THE CORDILLERA VILCANOTA<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In an effort to take in as much nature as possible\u00a0in the beautiful Cordillera Vilcanota but very tight on time, I opted for a two day\/one night trek to the Rainbow Mountain Peru.<\/p>\n<p>I was\u00a0collected\u00a0early in the morning from <a href=\"https:\/\/atvcuscoadventures.com\/tours\/quad-bike-moray-salineras-half-day-tour\/\">Cusco<\/a> for a four hour drive beginning in\u00a0the Vilcanota Valley. Not a morning person myself I slept\u00a0the first part\u00a0of\u00a0the ride, but when I woke up I was delighted by the mountain views\u00a0and llamas just outside my window. We made a brief stop at the Colonial Church of the Immaculate Conception, and then proceeded to ride through the Pitumarca Valley and alongside the Japura Gorge.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-30198 lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aracari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Rainbow-Mountain-Peru-9.jpg\" alt=\"Exploring Rainbow Mountain Peru, Aracari Travel\" width=\"1000\" height=\"800\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.aracari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Rainbow-Mountain-Peru-9.jpg\" \/>We then arrived in the small town of Chillca, where we were greeted by members of the community and the llamas and horses that would be carrying our things along the trek. Our first day was a fairly easy hour and a half hike to the\u00a0<strong><em>tambo<\/em>, or Andean Lodge<\/strong>, were we would stay the night. \u00a0That evening we had a delicious Peruvian meal prepared from fresh produce, and enjoyed some authentic music by Chillca\u2019s locals.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"THE_ASCENT_TO_THE_FAMOUS_RAINBOW_MOUNTAIN_PERU_VIEWPOINT\"><\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-30197 lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aracari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Rainbow-Mountain-Peru-6-1.jpg\" alt=\"Exploring Rainbow Mountain Peru, Aracari Travel\" width=\"1000\" height=\"800\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.aracari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Rainbow-Mountain-Peru-6-1.jpg\" \/><strong>THE ASCENT TO THE FAMOUS RAINBOW MOUNTAIN PERU VIEWPOINT<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>After a filling breakfast the next day, we waved goodbye to the warm people of Chillca and journeyed to the Caurahuire community. From here we began to ascend Vinicunca, only a few hours away from a beautiful view of the Rainbow Mountain Peru.<\/p>\n<p>The path was not steep, nor seemingly difficult, but due to the altitude I was walking a bit slower than normal. Over the course of about three and a half hours I saw pastures of alpacas, valleys of stones, and had a lovely conversation with my Peruvian guide, Maurice.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30192 size-full lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aracari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Rainbow-Mountain-Peru-4.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 996px) 100vw, 996px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aracari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Rainbow-Mountain-Peru-4.jpg 996w, https:\/\/www.aracari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Rainbow-Mountain-Peru-4-570x380.jpg 570w\" alt=\"Exploring Rainbow Mountain Peru, Aracari Travel\" width=\"996\" height=\"665\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.aracari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Rainbow-Mountain-Peru-4.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aracari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Rainbow-Mountain-Peru-4.jpg 996w, https:\/\/www.aracari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Rainbow-Mountain-Peru-4-570x380.jpg 570w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 996px) 100vw, 996px\" \/>The views along the way were incredible, and Maurice explained to me that the route we were walking is named\u00a0<strong>\u2018Camino del Apu Austengate.\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0As mentioned, it is located close to the highest and most sacred mountain in the Cusco region, the\u00a0<em>Apu<\/em>, which means bearer of life or guardian. While I observed the surrounding mountains on the trek I couldn\u2019t help but appreciate why\u00a0<em>Pachamama<\/em>, mother earth, is worshiped and understand how the route got its name.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30193 size-full lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aracari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Rainbow-Mountain-Peru-5.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 995px) 100vw, 995px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aracari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Rainbow-Mountain-Peru-5.jpg 995w, https:\/\/www.aracari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Rainbow-Mountain-Peru-5-570x380.jpg 570w\" alt=\"Exploring Rainbow Mountain Peru, Aracari Travel\" width=\"995\" height=\"664\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.aracari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Rainbow-Mountain-Peru-5.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aracari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Rainbow-Mountain-Peru-5.jpg 995w, https:\/\/www.aracari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Rainbow-Mountain-Peru-5-570x380.jpg 570w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 995px) 100vw, 995px\" \/>Finally we reached the view of the Rainbow Mountain Peru. It was beautiful, and extremely cold at the top. I spent about 15 minutes admiring the<a href=\"https:\/\/atvcuscoadventures.com\/tours\/pallay-punchu-tour-full-day\/\">\u00a0<strong>incredible natural colors<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0of the mountain and examining the\u00a0<strong>geological wonder<\/strong>\u00a0in front of me before it started hailing ice, and wind began penetrating my rain jacket. That being said, I was travelling in\u00a0rainy season\u00a0and if you have flexible travel dates would recommend a visit between May and October.<\/p>\n<p>We decided to descend just a bit before enjoying a delicious picnic lunch. From our lunch spot we had a much more agreeable climate and could still take in the view of Rainbow Mountain Peru. After lunch I of course had to snap a few selfies before finishing the walk and embarking on the\u00a0three hour drive back to Cusco. Upon arrival in the city, I couldn\u2019t help but smile as I scrolled through my photos from the trek.\u00a0I would highly recommend a trek to Rainbow Mountain Peru to any travelers looking for amazing views and a bit of adventure.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"AN_IMPORTANT_CONSIDERATION_FOR_TREKKING_AT_HIGH_ALTITUDE\"><\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30191 size-full lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aracari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Rainbow-Mountain-Peru-3.jpg\" alt=\"Exploring Rainbow Mountain Peru, Aracari Travel\" width=\"999\" height=\"654\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.aracari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Rainbow-Mountain-Peru-3.jpg\" \/><strong><em>AN IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION FOR TREKKING AT HIGH ALTITUDE<\/em><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>While the views are breathtaking, the altitude can also quite literally take your breath away. \u00a0The Rainbow Mountain Peru is located at\u00a0<strong>5,200 meters (17,060 feet)<\/strong>. Higher than any peak in the continental USA, it can take a toll on the lungs of even the most experienced trekkers. That being said, it is important to spend some time acclimatizing at high altitude- relaxing in Cusco or taking in the mountain air from a beautiful lodge- before trekking to the Rainbow Mountain Peru.
